ACC Highland Featured as a Retrofit Case Study

In the latest edition of Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia, authors thoroughly explore the transformation of derelict suburban neighborhoods into revived retrofitted communities that promote mixed-use, walkability, and increased density. We were thrilled to see ACC Highland—formerly a suburban shopping mall and one of Coleman & Associates’ recently completed projects—featured as one of the thirty-two retrofit case studies. Aan recalls her personal experiences in being involved with the project for several decades:

“I have very fond memories of shopping at this mall in the ‘80s.  It was THE place to go for all Austinites for the best shopping not to mention the best Santa Claus in town!  Over time, this mall like thousands of others across the nation fell prey to new format outdoor multi-use urban developments and of course—internet shopping.

To see this site transformed into a vibrant hub anchored by one of the best community colleges in the nation has been a career-high.  Our long-term relationship with ACC, the super-inspired architecture by BGK, and working with our friends at Flintco construction makes this new vibrant community so very special to our firm.”
