LEED Gold Certification
Located within Austin’s Mueller neighborhood on a former airport site, Dr. General Marshall Middle School is a 130,000-square-foot campus designed to serve approximately 800 students as part of the 2017 Austin ISD Bond program. The new LEED Gold–certified facility is composed of two structures organized around a “central park” courtyard that anchors the campus and reinforces principles of new urbanism. Design elements throughout the site reference the area’s aviation history while creating an accessible, neighborhood-connected campus that supports indoor–outdoor learning, collaboration, and flexible use.
The central courtyard features an oval-shaped lawn, covered outdoor dining areas, a learning stair with stage, vegetable garden, basketball court, and shaded patios that extend learning beyond the classroom. Dining is intentionally split between indoor and outdoor spaces, strengthening daily connections to the landscape. Sustainable strategies include recycled water use and shared athletic facilities that support both school and community use. Coleman & Associates served as landscape architect for the project, providing services from Schematic Design through Construction Observation and shaping a cohesive, people-centered environment that integrates education, community, and open space.
